Course Description
This Intermediate First Aid (Level 2) course includes additional content and skills not covered in the Basic First Aid (Level 1) course. These skills include first aid for head, neck, and spinal injuries, first aid for chest, abdominal, and pelvic injuries, immobilisation techniques, and first aid for drowning. We encourage anyone who has completed a Basic First Aid (Level 1) course to progress to this Intermediate First Aid (Level 2) course. This course is also appropriate for higher-risk working environments – such as manufacturing, mining, construction, security personnel, field workers, etc. – as well as anyone interested in improving their general first aid skills.
The course is facilitated by experienced paramedics who are committed to developing confident, capable First Aiders through engaging training sessions. Every delegate who attends the course will gain extensive hands-on practical experience through the use of CPR manikins, simulated emergency scenarios, and realistic role-play exercises designed to build confidence and practical first aid skills.
Absolute Health Services is approved by the Department of Employment and Labour as a first aid training provider. We are also accredited by the HWSETA (Health and Welfare Sector Education Training Authority), QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations) and the RCSA (Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa). Our Intermediate First Aid (Level 2) course is aligned to the requirements of QCTO SP-203802.
No prior first aid training is required for attendance to this first aid course.
Course Modules
This Intermediate First Aid (Level 2) course content includes the following modules:
- Introduction, principles of first aid, legal aspects, ethics, scene safety
- Positioning and elementary anatomy and physiology
- Scene survey and casualty assessment
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and choking
- Shock and fainting
- Bleeding, wounds, and burns
- Fractures, sprains, and strains
- Head, neck, and spinal injuries
- Chest, abdominal, pelvic, and extremity injuries and immobilisation techniques
- Environmental emergencies, drowning, bites, stings, and poisoning
- Medical emergencies.
- Handover, scene clean-up, record keeping, and incident reporting
- Communicating with Emergency Medical Services and higher levels
Course Outcomes
This Intermediate First Aid (Level 2) course is aligned to QCTO Skills Programme SP-230802 Intermediate Emergency First Aid Responder. These requirements include:
Knowledge component: Concepts and principles of intermediate emergency first aid
- Principles of providing intermediate emergency first aid.
- Effective application of intermediate emergency first aid.
- Basic human anatomy and physiology for intermediate emergency first aid.
- Recognise emergencies, injuries, and illnesses, and treat appropriately using intermediate emergency first aid techniques.
Practical component: Apply intermediate emergency first aid techniques
- Provide intermediate emergency first aid for a variety of medical, trauma, and environmental emergencies.
Exit Level Outcome 1
Apply principles of intermediate emergency first aid on an accident scene.
Exit Level Outcome 2
Apply secondary and ongoing patient assessments and deal with conditions requiring further first aid care.
Exit Level Outcome 3
Use a variety of common instruments and processes to apply intermediate emergency first aid within the scope of practice.
