Emergencies require a competent response that only well-trained first aiders can provide. The Intermediate Emergency First Aid Responder course at Absolute Health Services improves on the basic first aid skills equipping participants with additional knowledge and practical techniques necessary to better handle first aid emergencies. . This intermediate first aid course is also important to maintain health and safety standards and compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, as required by the Department of Employment and Labour.

Participants completing this intermediate level course will develop improved insight into first aid knowledge and practices, enabling them to effectively treat first aid injuries and illness as a more improved first aid level.

  • Principles of providing intermediate emergency first aid
  • Effective application of intermediate emergency first aid
  • Basic human anatomy and physiology for intermediate emergency first aid
  • Recognise emergencies, injuries, and illnesses, and treat appropriately using intermediate emergency first aid techniques
    • Role, ethics and PPE
    • Safety, communication, monitoring and handover
    • Record keeping and scene management
    • Primary and secondary assessment
    • Head, spinal, chest and abdominal injuries
    • Pelvic and bowel evisceration injuries
    • Heart attack, asthma, seizures, anaphylaxis, diabetic and stroke emergencies
    • Drowning  
    • Bites and stings
    • Poisoning
    • Thermal

Practical Skills Activity & Module:

  • Provide intermediate emergency first aid for a variety of medical, trauma and environmental emergencies
  • Activity elements include:
    • Hazards, primary and secondary surveys, respond appropriately
    • Bleeding, wounds, and burns
    • Patients with breathing difficulties: Treatment of choking
    • Perform CPR if indicated, for adult, child, infant, including use of AED
    • Unconsciousness, and place patients in the recovery position
    • Traumatic injuries: Range can include: Fractures, head and spinal, chest injuries, abdominal injuries, or shock
    • Medical emergencies: Range can include: Cardiac emergency, stroke, anaphylaxis, diabetic emergency, seizure, asthma attack.

Duration of the Course:

3 days of knowledge and practical based training.


Delegates will receive a certificate within 14 days after successfully completing the course.


This course is available onsite for groups of 8 or more, or at any of our training centers located in Johannesburg, Durban, Gqeberha, and Cape Town.
